Sweeney Todd | 2024 | Cottey College
CONCEPT:
- Center the set around a fully mobile “cube” structure that allows that morphes through the show to mirror the layers and “new angles” of each character.
- Create moments of isolation by utilizing rolling stairs that leave areas unreachable (floating door to Johannah’s room)
- Utilize the fully mobile cube to create moments where the audience feels intimately close to the characters and contrast them with moments of distance to the characters
- Use asymmetry to create an unsettling feeling within the audience
- Utilize colors and textures to differentiate class through various locations within London while also painting the world through Todd’s eyes
- Accommodate to the technical needs of the set while meeting the expectations of the audience (ie. the trapdoor and slide)
- Maintain historical accuracy to Victorian London while incorporating elements of steampunk in avenues of freedom or reclamation.
- Find moments to incorporate elements from the penny dreadful series “The String of Pearls” which inspired Sweeney Todd

The Sweet Science of Bruising | 2023 | Cottey College
Synopsis: This show follows four unlikely women as they enter the world of women’s boxing in Victorian England 1869. Not only are these women fighting for the title of the one and only lady boxing champion but also fighting for their rights and freedom from oppression for their sex, class and beliefs.
Design Concept: Through the use of periaktois, I created a fully mobile set that directly reflects the metaphor that boxing is a dance while also allowing the ability to create spaces of both freedom and confinement. Through the use of color, I emphasized and differentiate the upper and lower class. The upper class is represented through greys and grey-blues and the lower class is represented burgundy, browns, and overall darker aesthetic. Lastly, I chose to place the boxing ring in the center of the stage with removable posts to highlight the idea that boxing is central to these ladies’ lives while also giving each woman the opportunity to face their oppressor within the ring.

Night of the Macabre, Cottey College, 2024
Synopsis: Four students enter the uncanny Museum of the Macabre guided by museum curator Eerie McGhoul. The museum exhibits stories from the gothic horror genre in the form of wax figure. As they journey through the museum, things seem.. strange. It's almost as it if the wax figures are coming to life!
Design Concept: Create a set that is asymmetrical to show the uncanny elements of the script. Develop exhibit style flats through color and pattern that are larger than life and reflect a maximalist, interactive art museum. Find ways to nod to the fact these are classic pieces of literature through Easter egg book pages. Develop a design that will assist in all practical effects of the show.

Alice in Wonderland | 2021
Synopsis: Alice in Wonderland follows a young, curious girl names Alice as she finds her way down the rabbit hole and into a world of wonder, mystery, and confusion. Along the way she grows tall and small and meets many odd creatures. She even meets another Alice! Will Alice escape this wonderland or become trapped?
Design Concept: To reflect the 1970's like period, I have chosen to lean into bright oranges, greens, reds, yellows and browns along with wooded textures to mimic the popular interior design styles at the time. The set will be comprised of time period furniture and acting cubes that can easily move on and off to create whimsical transitions as Alice wanders wonderland. Three larger hollow cubes with act as the focal points for the set and allow characters to mysteriously disappear and reappear from scene to scene.
